Macular Corneal Dystrophy (MCD)
MCD is a hereditary eye disease that causes severe visual impairment in affected dogs.
Dogs affected with MCD will develop cloudy eyes, due to an abnormal accumulation of carbohydrates in their corneas. There is no known treatment for this.
Testing for MCD.
A new DNA screening test to identify both affected and carrier dogs has just been developed.
Prevention of MCD
As in PRSA & PKD If one parent is normal and another is a carrier, the pups will not be affected but some will be carriers.
To help eradicate MCD it is best to ensure both parents are clear.
